Plumbing Problems (Not-So) Flushable Wipes

In recent years, the use of “flushable” wipes has become increasingly popular. While these wipes may be convenient, many professional plumbers find that these wipes are a source of a lot of tenant plumbing issues.

Non-Biodegradable Materials: Most wipes, including baby wipes and those labeled as “flushable”, are made from non-biodegradable materials. Unlike toilet paper, which disintegrates quickly in water, these wipes are often made of materials that take much longer to break down. As a result, they can accumulate in sewage systems, causing inconvenient and costly blockages and back-ups.

Environmental Impact: The environmental consequences of flushing wipes extend far beyond a home’s plumbing. When wipes enter the sewage system, they can contribute to the formation of Fatbergs – massive accumulations of wipes, grease, and other non-biodegradable materials. Fatbergs can wreak havoc on water treatment facilities and pose a threat to marine life in rivers and oceans.

Alternative for Disposal: To avoid plumbing problems associated with flushing wipes of any kind, please dispose of all types in the trash.

Other common items that you should NEVER flush include:

  • Diapers
  • Paper towels
  • Facial tissue (Kleenex)
  • Cotton swabs (Q-Tips)
  • Hair
  • Gum wrappers
  • Candy wrappers
  • Facial cotton pads
  • Dental floss
  • Cigarettes
  • Cotton balls
  • Scoops of cat litter
  • Women’s hygiene products (tampons, maxi-pads)
  • Band-aids
  • Makeup remover wipes

By choosing responsible disposal methods and adopting more eco-friendly alternatives, tenants can play a part in preventing plumbing issues, incurring the plumbing charges and protecting the health of our water systems.
